The Chicago White Cubs have seemingly put a pause on trade discussions surrounding outfielder Luis Robert Jr., following reports from Bob Nightengale that the slugger’s recent performance dip might have cooled interest from other teams, including the Los Angeles Dodgers. With Robert Jr.’s recent struggles at the plate post-injury, the Sox seem inclined to hold on to him for now, potentially frustrating the Dodgers’ plans to bolster their lacking outfield firepower.

Despite this, the Dodgers may still have viable targets before the trade deadline. Nightengale’s coverage indicates that the Oakland Athletics, known for their willingness to deal at the deadline, are actively shopping players including outfielders Brent Rooker and Miguel Andújar. Both players have stood out in an Athletics squad that has performed better than expected this season.

Rooker, who represented the Athletics in last year’s All-Star Game, has continued his impressive form into this season. Last year, he delivered 30 home runs and led the team in RBIs, slugging, and OPS. His capability to connect powerfully with off-speed pitches makes him a valuable asset, and with most of LA’s lower-order hitters struggling to hit homers, Rooker could be a crucial addition.

On the other hand, Andújar presents a somewhat riskier proposition. After bouncing between the majors and minors last season with the Pirates, and suffering early-season injuries this year, he has been a gamble. Nevertheless, since returning from knee surgery in late May, Andújar has shown promise by hitting .305 with crucial extra-base hits contributing to his tally.

Both players could potentially lift a Dodgers lineup that has seen several of its members underperform, although neither possesses Robert Jr.’s all-around prowess. Like Rooker, Andújar’s defense is questionable, though it’s not markedly worse than some current Dodgers’ options.

With other players such as Randy Arozarena also potentially available, the Dodgers might still enhance their roster significantly through trades, even if Robert Jr. stays put for now. As the trade season heats up, the Dodgers could be active yet, making moves that shape their team dynamics for the rest of the season.
