Corey Seager’s Close Call: Rangers Star Escapes Serious Injury After Being Hit by Pitch

In a concerning moment for the Texas Rangers and their fans, shortstop Corey Seager was forced to leave the field during Saturday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles following a painful encounter with a pitch. The incident, which saw Seager struck by a pitch from Orioles’ left-hander Cade Povich around his hand/wrist area, left observers holding their breath.

However, initial indications may offer some relief as X-rays on Seager’s wrist returned negative, as reported by Evan Grant from the Dallas Morning News. A more thorough evaluation is expected to take place Sunday morning, providing clarity on Seager’s immediate future with the team.

The troubling event unfolded in the fifth inning while facing a full count, when Povich’s fastball made contact, visibly affecting Seager. Video from the game shows Seager’s distress as he hit the ground before being assisted off the field by the team’s medical staff, without much hesitation. Replays shared by FOX Sports: MLB on Twitter captured the moment in detail, highlighting the potential severity of the impact.

Josh H. Smith, originally starting at third base for the evening, stepped in to cover Seager’s position following the injury, with rookie Davis Wendzel taking over duties at third base in a subsequent adjustment to the infield.

This close call for Seager comes amid a season already noted for similar incidents, drawing parallels to Minnesota Twins shortstop Carlos Correa’s recent scare. Correa too was struck in a comparable manner earlier in the week but managed to avoid serious injury, with X-rays returning negative, and did not miss any playing time.

The occurrence is somewhat of a deja vu for Seager, who experienced a broken hand in May 2021 after a similar incident involving a pitch from left-handed Ross Detwiler. That injury sidelined him for over two months, a setback the Rangers are hoping to avoid this time around.

At 30 years of age, Seager has been a valuable asset to the Rangers, contributing significantly across the first 71 games of the season. Boasting a batting average of .258, an on-base percentage of .342, and a slugging percentage of .439, he has produced 14 home runs, 36 RBIs, and even secured a stolen base. His performance has earned him an estimated 2.3 Wins Above Replacement (WAR), as per calculations by Baseball Reference.

Seager’s leadership and skills are indeed critical for the Rangers, particularly as the team seeks to improve upon their current standing. As the defending World Series champions, the Rangers entered Saturday’s game with a below-expectation record of 37-45, trailing by nine games in the American League West and eight games in the wild-card race. Seager’s swift recovery would not only be a relief for him personally but could also provide a much-needed boost for the Rangers as they continue to navigate through a challenging season.
