Cincinnati Reds Shake Up Their Roster, Saying Goodbye to Former Dodgers Catcher

The Cincinnati Reds made a quick roster adjustment over the weekend, briefly adding catcher Austin Wynns to their team from Triple-A Louisville before designating him for assignment just two days later. This move came alongside the promotion of infielder Livan Soto to the major league roster.

Wynns, who was previously with the Los Angeles Dodgers, filled the roster spot vacated by outfielder Jacob Hurtubise, who was sent down to Louisville. Additionally, in order to make room for Wynns’ short stint on the 40-man roster, outfielder Conner Capel was also designated for assignment.

Having previously played for teams such as the Baltimore Orioles, San Francisco Giants, the Dodgers, and the Colorado Rockies over five seasons, Wynns brought a big-league experience to the Reds. Throughout his 653 plate appearances in the majors, Wynns compiled a batting line of .226/.273/.324, contributing 20 doubles, 13 home runs, and 35 walks while striking out 147 times.

Announced via a tweet from the Reds on June 23, 2024, the quick transition left Wynns without making an appearance in a game for Cincinnati. Slated as the potential third choice catcher behind Tyler Stephenson and Luke Maile, his opportunity was cut short.

Before his brief elevation to the Reds, Wynns played 30 games for the Louisville Bats in 2024, batting .252 with an on-base percentage of .310 and a slugging percentage of .408. After being designated for assignment, Wynns faces the possibility of becoming a free agent should he pass through waivers unclaimed.

Wynns entered the MLB ranks after being picked in the 10th round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the Orioles and has since had a journeyman career across several teams. His time with the Dodgers last season included two hits in 11 at-bats over five games.

The Reds’ latest roster moves reflect the ongoing adjustments teams make throughout the season to balance their lineup and farm system prospects.
