Former Los Angeles Chargers star wide receiver Mike Williams is staying in the AFC and joining forces with a future Hall of Famer at quarterback.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the veteran wide receiver has agreed to a one-year deal with Aaron Rodgers’ New York Jets worth up to $15 million. Williams was released by the Chargers in a cap-saving move last week.

The Jets had a pressing need for a No. 2 wide receiver to complement Garrett Wilson, and GM Joe Douglas just might have found it with the Mike Williams signing. The 29-year-old has a pair of 1,000-yard seasons under his belt and has developed a reputation as one of the league’s best deep threat and contested catch specialists.

Williams unfortunately suffered a season-ending ACL tear in Week 3 against the Minnesota Vikings, cutting his 2023 campaign short. He was off to an excellent start with 19 receptions for 249 yards and one touchdown in those contests before the injury.

The Chargers appear to be rebuilding under new head coach Jim Harbaugh and GM Joe Hortiz, who traded away Pro Bowl wideout Keenan Allen to the Chicago Bears in another cap-saving move. With Mike Williams now gone, the Chargers have plenty of work to do in reshaping their WR room.

Mike Williams Is The Perfect Fit For The Jets

The Jets have lacked a capable No. 2 option to Garrett Wilson since his arrival in 2022. On top of that, Rodgers himself didn’t have a capable No. 2 receiver to complement Davante Adams during his final years in Green Bay.

But Mike Williams, a perfect No. 2 option to Keenan Allen in La La Land, should immediately serve as another quality playmaker in the New York offense. Williams has averaged 15.6 yards per catch in his seven-year career and should do wonders in an offense led by Rodgers, owner of one of the game’s best deep balls.

For his career, Mike Williams has 309 receptions for 4,806 yards and 31 touchdowns.
