Ex-MLB Star Sentenced to Prison for Embezzlement

Former Major League Baseball star Raul Mondesi, who once graced the outfield for the Los Angeles Dodgers, has been sentenced to almost seven years in prison for corruption during his time as the mayor of San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic. In addition to his prison sentence, Mondesi is also required to pay a hefty fine of 30 million pesos (about $500,000), according to Listin Diario, a Spanish-language news outlet.

The sentencing took place on Friday at the San Cristóbal Collegiate Court, concluding years of legal proceedings that began with his initial conviction in 2017. Mondesi had served as the city’s mayor from 2010 to 2016, during which he was found guilty of embezzling public funds.

As per the court’s decision, an arrangement was settled between the prosecution and Mondesi’s defense team. According to the terms, Mondesi will serve six years of house arrest as part of the total sentence handed down by the judges.

In the same case, several other former officials from Mondesi’s administration were also sentenced, including Bienvenido Araujo Japa, the former general secretary; Jesús Antonio Ferreira, the former treasurer; and Pedro Cordero, the former comptroller.

Raul Mondesi’s baseball career was marked by significant achievements including a unanimous selection as the National League Rookie of the Year in 1994 while playing for the Dodgers. He also earned two Gold Glove awards and made an appearance in the 1995 All-Star Game.

Mondesi played for several other MLB teams including the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks, Pittsburgh Pirates, Los Angeles Angels, and Atlanta Braves, eventually retiring in 2005 with a career batting average of .273, alongside 271 home runs and 860 RBIs. Not long after leaving baseball, Mondesi transitioned to a political career and was elected mayor of San Cristóbal in 2010.
