Winner: The Voice Australia coach Guy Sebastian celebrated his brother Chris (pictured) winning the competition on Sunday night. But many viewers were far from happy, taking to Twitter to dismiss the outcome as ‘rigged’ and ‘unfair’
Despite his connection to one of the judges, the younger Sebastian took home the $100,000 cash prize and a record contract with EMI.
‘He broke the rules by even participating. He has an immediate family member working for the company. Why was this allowed? It says in the terms and conditions not to apply if you have family working for the company. #RIGGED,’ one furious viewer tweeted, while sharing a screenshot of The Voice’s application form.
‘Family members and friends of the judges should NOT be allowed to compete,’ another angry fan replied.
‘Why do people even watch The Voice? It’s a total waste of f**king time, just cancel the show. Everyone who has won that show hasn’t done s**t. They win and then just disappear and we never see them again,’ a third wrote.
Overwhelming backlash: Many viewers said the other finalists ‘were robbed’
‘He broke the rules’: Many claimed that having a celebrity couch for a brother should have disqualified Chris from applying for the show
In his element: After the winner announcement, Chris was invited back on stage to perform. Earlier in the episode, he’d sung Linkin Park’s Numb and Daryl Braithwaite’s The Horses
One fan tweeted sarcastically: ‘A relative of one of The Voice judges won this year… what a surprising and totally not rigged coincidence!’
Another wrote: ‘[Chris] being Guy’s brother was a huge advantage, which we know helped him get further. Johnny and Siala are fresh new talent. They were robbed.’
Others suggested that the support of the Hillsong megachurch community helped Chris secure the majority of public votes.
‘The least of the performers tonight but he, shock, won. It’s crook and #rigged & Hillsonged,’ one critic tweeted.

Pure joy: Guy (pictured), who is a coach on The Voice, couldn’t wipe the smile off his face as his younger brother won the show
‘Cancel the show!’ Fans claimed the competition was ‘bulls**t’ and doesn’t produce real talent
Matt Gresham, a singer who also appeared on The Voice this year, tweeted the result alongside a quote from Proverbs 12:19, which read: ‘Truthful lips endure forever.’
Tellingly, the full verse continues: ‘But a lying tongue lasts only a moment.’
One fan agreed with what Matt seemed to be suggesting, commenting below the post: ‘Just shows how rigged it is and you have the right to tell it like it is, Matt.’
But another hit back, writing: ‘Guy had nothing to do with Chris’ entire journey. You’re just salty.’

‘You have the right to tell it like it is’: While some of Matt’s fans agreed with what he seemed to be suggesting, others said Chris was deserving of the win and that Matt was being ‘salty’
Others on Twitter also stood up for Chris, saying he was deserving of the win and that neither Chris nor Guy should be shamed for the public’s decision.
One fan pointed out that while the show’s terms and conditions do state that ‘you cannot have a relative that is working on or part of the show’, exemptions are granted ‘at the sole discretion of the Producer’.
Daily Mail Australia has contacted Nine to clarify The Voice’s terms and conditions.
‘You deserve all the praise, this is your moment,’ coach Kelly Rowland (pictured) said after her team member was crowned the winner of The Voice 2020
