During the latest episode of the 7 PM in Brooklyn podcast, Carmelo Anthony and Andre Iguodala discuss the challenges of taking a pay cut and financial sacrifices in the NBA.
Carmelo Anthony: Once you do it, It’s over. Even if it’s like somebody is helping you out or helping you in a situation. Once you kick that door, then that’s your box, you are stuck, no matter what. Because now, we getting you for pennies on the dollar now.
Andre Iguodala: And then they package it as doing what’s best for the team. He’s a team guy, a great locker room guy, and everything’s great, but then as soon as free agency hit, Ah, your values are not what they were. We see you here. Do you want to win? Because then they hold the ring culture against you.
The Philadelphia 76ers drafted Iguodala ninth overall in the 2004 NBA Draft. He played 19 seasons in the NBA, representing various teams, including the Philadelphia 76ers, Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, and Denver Nuggets, before retiring. Iguodala was awarded the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 2015 and won four NBA championships with the Warriors. On the other hand, Anthony, recognized as one of the greatest scorers in NBA history, joined the 2003 NBA Draft after playing one season with the Syracuse Orange. He was selected by the Denver Nuggets as the third overall pick. Over the course of 19 seasons in the NBA, he played for different teams, including the Nuggets, New York Knicks, Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Portland Trail Blazers, and Los Angeles Lakers Lakers.
Anthony Looks Back on Epic Training Sessions with Stephen Curry in the Gym
During the same episode, Anthony also recalled the time when he worked out with the Warriors’ star player, Stephen Curry, in the gym.
“My first couple of years, I’m in the gym. (Chris Paul) is coming out of college, first year, he’s coming to the workouts now. CP brings Steph to the workout. I’m watching Steph, and he’s just studying all the s***, the different types of unorthodox workouts that we were doing with a tennis ball; close your eyes and watch the fingers over here; count to five.” Anthony said.
Kiyan Anthony, Anthony’s son, is going above and beyond to make his father proud. He is currently attending a prestigious camp in Florida, where the 17-year-old just scored 42 points in a game.
