Yankees Cut Ties with Former Dodgers Pitcher After Rough Start

Phil Bickford, once a key bullpen piece for the Los Angeles Dodgers, has seen his time with the New York Yankees come to an end as he was designated for assignment by the team.

The move was disclosed by the Yankees today on their Twitter/X account, outlining the adjustments to their roster ahead of the day’s game. It was announced that left-handed pitcher Josh Maciejewski would be joining the active roster, wearing number 63, as Bickford made way.

The Yankees had picked up Bickford’s contract back on June 21, hoping he could regain the form that once made him a valuable reliever. However, his performance in New York fell short of expectations.

During his brief stint, he allowed eight earned runs, managing a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 4:1 over just five innings pitched. This led to his removal from the 40-man roster to open a slot for Maciejewski.

Bickford, a 28-year-old pitcher originally from Southern California, first gained MLB prominence with the Dodgers. The team claimed him off waivers in 2021, and over three seasons, he demonstrated considerable skill on the mound. Bickford accumulated an 8-6 record, a 4.11 ERA, and struck out 174 batters across 152 games, spanning 153.1 innings, representing some of the most productive times of his career.

His performance dipped in his final season with the Dodgers, however, where he tallied a 2-3 record and a 5.14 ERA before the team designated him for assignment in late July 2023. Bickford attempted to bounce back with the New York Mets for the remainder of the 2023 season and later joined the Yankees on a minor league deal in April 2024.

Originally drafted in the first round as the 10th overall pick by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2013 MLB Draft, Bickford has amassed an 11-8 record with a career ERA of 4.48 over 183 games.
